Big News

April 29th, 2008

I quit my job. (Heather – I thought this is how you would want to find out…)

I just put in my notice on Friday. I have accepted a new job at an angel-funded startup in San Francisco. The startup will be working on database security and my role will be “Interface Architect”. I am really excited about this new opportunity.

Since I will soon be transitioning to the startup lifestyle (long hours and little vacation), I have decided to take one week off in between jobs. I decided that I needed to get the travel bug out of my system while I still could, so I started searching for flights all over the world. I found a good deal to Panama ($583) but when I went to buy it last night, the price had jumped to $680. So I started the search all over again and found an even better deal — $510 to Lima, Peru! So I booked a rather impulsive and spontaneous trip to South America. Machu Picchu here I come!

If anyone wants to join me in Peru in the last week of May, let me know.

Duke 5 Year Reunion

April 16th, 2008

Duke Reunion
This past weekend was my 5 year college reunion. It was my first time back in Durham since Homecoming in October 2004. After getting lost on my way to the hotel, I finally got my bearings and remembered my way around. It was really interesting to walk around campus and see how much has changed in only five years. When I graduated there was a lot of construction going on and now most of that construction is finished. Here are the main changes to campus that I noticed:

  • New Parking Garage behind the Bryan Center (much needed)
  • New, improved Bryan Center walk-way
  • Perkins library expansion
  • Engineering School expansion – I barely recognized Science Drive. I like how they integrated it into West Campus. Feels less isolated now.
  • Lots of new outdoor patio areas all over campus
  • New dorm on East – Belltower
  • Added traffic circle on Towerview drive

Walking around the Duke campus felt like I was in some fantasy land. I think I realized it to some degree while I was there, but now that I am working out in the “real world” and can see the college lifestyle from a different perspective, I must say that was the life! Maybe I should go back to school…

Late-night Cookout

Durham Food Tour

Of course it was good to catch up with old friends and walk around campus to see what had changed, but since my life revolves around food, I was most excited about the Durham food tour — going back to all of my favorite spots from college. So I hit up Wimpy’s Grill, Cosmic Cantina, Bullock’s BBQ, Cookout, and the ‘Dillo (mmmm…queso). In the great burger taste-off between Wimpy’s and Cookout, I think Cookout wins for best burger (especially at 2 in the morning) but Wimpy’s still wins for atmosphere. With all this gorging this weekend, I think I may have set my tri training back a little bit. I guess I will just have to work a bit harder these last 3 weeks.
